Ngera Washing Station

Ngera Washing Station is located on the gently rolling hills of the Ngera region in Nyaruguru District, southern Rwanda. This washing station is situated near Kibeho, one of the holy sites where the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared, and is a mystical area with views extending across the border to the peaks of Burundi.
The washing station was established in 2010 and has been producing excellent coffee every year since 2020, with Shambi Coffee Co. as its operating body. Ngera coffee processes coffee cherries produced by small-scale farmers living in the Ngera region of Nyaruguru District, where the washing station is located, as well as in the neighboring five hills of Cyahinda, Rusenge, Nyagisogi, and Huye Gishambwe. With elevations ranging from 1710m to a maximum of 2250m in the highest areas, it boasts consistently cool temperatures and stable rainfall throughout the year, along with well-draining soil that retains moisture, providing ideal conditions for coffee cherries to ripen slowly over time. Benefiting from this microclimate, the Bourbon cherries produced here are high in sugar content and possess vibrant, floral aromas.

Honey Process

In addition to the traditional washed process, the production unit is also exploring various other processes such as honey, natural, and anaerobic, leveraging the expertise Shambi Coffee has gained at other washing stations.
Cherries brought to the washing station undergo re-sorting by handpicking and gravity separation in water channels for all processes, ensuring only fully ripe cherries are properly processed. Subsequently, wet parchment with high maturity is selected through gravity separation in water channels and sorting with pulping machines, then carefully dried on 125 drying tables at the washing station. Daily, female staff primarily manage the stirring and parchment picking in the drying area, which is said to significantly contribute to quality. Mr. Abdul, the representative of Shambi Coffee, proudly states that the honesty and dedication of the farmers and staff are Ngera's pride.

Sustainable Coffee and Culture

Ngera Washing Station prioritizes environmental protection, minimizing its ecological impact by installing solar power generators and using backup generators to reduce energy consumption. They also work to conserve nearby springs and water sources.
Abdul states that Ngera is not just a washing station. Its mission is to be a bridge that shares Nyaruguru's culture, history, the microclimate that produces excellent coffee, and the honest handiwork of its people with the world. He passionately expresses his desire to create an amazing flavor that tells the story of this coffee, a fusion of Rwanda's magnificent natural bounty and modern coffee production methods.
